DWP looks to digital in reform plan for public communications

After a formal investigation identified “maladministration” related to its communication with citizens, the Department for Work and Pensions has promised a programme of reform, with a focus on digital modes of contact. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) published a report in 2024 that found that the DWP had failed to adequately communicate with women born in the 1950s about a rise in the State Pension age.

Defra awards three £150m deals for DevOps and legacy support

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has awarded three contracts worth a cumulative £450m covering the provision of DevOps services and support for existing legacy applications. On 21 May, the department entered into engagements with three tech suppliers: Kainos; i10; and Equal Experts. Each of the firms has been retained on an identical four-year deal, all three of which are valued at £150m – which is likely to add up to a total cost of £540m, inclusive of VAT.

HMRC receives 6,500 applications for exemption from digital tax regime

HM Revenue and Customs about 6,500 applications from citizens claiming an exemption from the new mandatory digital income tax regime – with almost 3,000 already granted the dispensation. As of the start of April, more than three quarters of a million self-employed people and landlords are required to use HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) system to keep online records and submit income tax self-assessment (ITSA) returns.
