Electrochemical treatment in KOH improves carbon nanomaterial performance to multiple neurochemicals† Carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs) are primarily used to detect neurotransmitters in vivo with fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) but other carbon nanomaterial electrodes are being developed. CFME sensitivity to dopamine is improved by applying a constant 1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl for 3 minutes while dipped in 1 M KOH, which etches the surface and adds oxygen functional groups.
