Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I submitted a feature I wrote as a student to a national newspaper, who took it.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I typed my thesis on an ancient portable Remington. It took forever.
How is social media changing news?
It has become a genuine meritocracy
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Knowing when the story isn't about you.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Short, clear pitches so I know what the subject is about. Save the arty talk for when I'm hooked.
What's your favorite social network?
Real Life
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I wrote features and drew cartoons
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
One, sadly, I can't talk about, but which required original research, left-field thinking and a leap of faith.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
No one, however important, ever got angry at being thanked.
