Sanjeev Shivadekar’s Journalist Portfolio

What was your first job as a journalist?

I began my journalism career at The Asian Age, but my real professional journey started with Hindustan Times in Mumbai. I was assigned the political beat, covering the Shiv Sena, founded by the late Balasaheb Thackeray. In 2005, I was entrusted with full political reporting responsibilities—right when Maharashtra politics was undergoing a dramatic shift. That year, veteran Shiv Sena leader Narayan Rane rebelled and joined the Congress, while Balasaheb’s nephew, Raj Thackeray, broke away from the party due to differences with his cousin Uddhav Thackeray and launched the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. Covering these seismic events so early in my career gave me a front-row seat to the inner workings of power, party dynamics, and Maharashtra's evolving political landscape.
