Take a stroll down Samish Way on any Thursday night, and you’ll eventually pass a small cohort of chess aficionados huddled shoulder to shoulder playing their game beneath the green and orange lights cast by the beer signs hanging outside McKay’s Taphouse. Stop and ask if you can play; that’s your induction into the Bellingham Chess Club. The club has been around since 2022, according to founding member and current organizer Ruby McCarter.
