About one billion people across low- and middle-income countries access healthcare facilities without electricity or with unreliable power (WHO et al. 2023). Diesel generators, often used as an alternate power source, are costly and polluting. Decentralized renewable energy (DRE), especially solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with batteries, offers a clean, cost-effective, modular, and climate-resilient solution to power essential medical equipment and improve healthcare delivery.

This publication offers clean energy solution providers in Tanzania an updated geospatial database for operating mini-grids through Energy Access Explorer (EAE), a “Digital Public Good” software. The database is a collaboration between local actors in the private and public sectors following agreed data standards. The publication also demonstrates the potential use of EAE in developing market expansion geospatial analysis.

Nepal has seen an astounding increase in its energy access rate between 2001-2021, moving from a total electrified population of 24% in 2001 to 90% in 2021. However, there are still over 3.5 million people in remote and rural areas of the country that do not have access to electricity services in their homes, schools or healthcare facilities. In addition, only 35% of the total population in Nepal have access to clean cooking technologies or fuels.
