Outdoor staycations for every type of St. Louis family
Spring break has a funny way of sneaking up on families. One minute you’re surviving winter, the next you’re realizing flights are expensive, crowds are intense, and your kids mostly just want snacks, space, and your attention anyway. The good news is that you don’t have to leave the region (or blow your budget) to make spring break feel special. A well-planned staycation close to home can offer all the reset of a big trip, with fewer logistics and more flexibility.
The screen-free weekend challenge for St. Louis families
When it comes to screen time, I’m usually the worst offender in my family. My kids don’t have phones (yet), but they have iPads, and if we’re home too long, those tablets magically become the default activity. And me? If I’m not scrolling, I’m “working” (translation: also scrolling). Occasionally, we all need a hard break to reset and swap screen time for green time–because the truth is, terrible reception almost always leads to better connection.
Best creeks near St. Louis for kids to splash, wade, and explore
Creeks are the ultimate parenting hack: they’re free; they’re everywhere; they’re full of wildlife; and they work for toddlers, teens, and everyone in between. You don’t need special gear or a day off—just water shoes, a net, and a sense of adventure. Luckily, the St. Louis area is overflowing (pun intended) with incredible creeks that are perfect for playing, exploring, and cooling off.

Should Charities Take Government Funds?
Should charities take government funds? What are the advantages, and dangers, of doing that? I’m wondering because I live in Illinois, and I’m on the board of a charity that started taking state funding in the 1990s. At the time, it seemed like a smart move to access taxpayer funding for faith-based charities. But now the charity has grown dependent on state funds, and the state budget is in deep crisis.
20 Must-take spring photos
As soon as the sun begins to shine and the weather turns warm, I am bursting at the seams to get outside and take some photos of my kids. Spring is packed with fun holidays, special events, and gorgeous colors, making it the perfect time to get the kids outside and play around with your camera. Whether you’re taking a trip to your local park or dressed up in your Easter finest, there are so many great occasions in spring that you’re going to want documented in digital format.
The Essential Things to Know Before You Visit Barcelona
Barcelona is Europe’s third most-visited city—a record 32 million people turned up last year—but it is also notably conflicted about tourism. In 2017, Ada Colau, Barcelona’s mayor, raised the tourist tax and approved a law that is supposed to restrict visitors by limiting the number of beds available in hotels and tightly licensing apartment rentals.
This Is the Barcelona Day Trip You Want to Go On
Travelers to Barcelona are often seduced by the idea of an excursion to Montserrat, the multi-peaked mountain that is home to a famous Benedictine abbey and its legendary black Madonna relic. Though enchanting, Montserrat is almost always overrun with tourists and religious pilgrims, which makes the experience of visiting decidedly _un_spiritual.
Creamed Kale and Eggs
Share Tweet One of my favorite grain-free breakfast recipes is creamed kale and eggs. I don’t count calories anymore. I used to ride the low fat bandwagon and stressed over every little morsel that touched my lips. I felt trapped. I couldn’t enjoy food, obsessed over how much weight I might gain. Then I learned about eating whole foods, and especially the benefits of healthy saturated fats. I learned that as you eat, your body will tell you when to stop. Really.
