Before our family experienced our first deployment, I assumed the hardest part would begin after my husband left — once the house was quieter and routines changed. What I did not expect was how much of the emotional shift would begin long before “day zero” came. In the weeks leading up to deployment, life on the surface looked normal. There were workdays, school schedules, errands, and the everyday routines that keep a household moving.
