Drummond files appeal after judge denies request to represent himself

June 8, 2026, 5:02 a.m. CT Quadruple murder suspect Austin Drummond has filed an appeal after a Lake County judge denied his request to represent himself. Drummond appeared in Lake County Circuit Court before Judge Mark Hayes late last week on the murder charges and on prior unrelated charges, including contraband that was allegedly found on him while he was jailed at Northwest Correctional Complex in July 2023.

Pleasant Plains rezoning draws concerned residents to city council

A 1.14-acre piece of undeveloped land is poised to be rezoned in northwest Jackson, and neighbors of the area made their voices heard before city councilmembers during the June 2 meeting. Eight residents said they were opposed to the rezoning, touting concerns over increased traffic and how the landscape of the community would change.
