By Sarah Lowden A newborn screening programme for spinal muscular atrophy is to be rolled out across England, the government has announced. The in-service evaluation (ISE) for SMA was first announced in April and was due to cover 72% of England. However, the DHSC has now said it will expand the programme to the whole country "to ensure children get the best treatment from the earliest possible moment".

By Sarah Lowden A new national infection and sepsis audit is to be commissioned by NHS England, as part of a 10-year strategy to reduce deaths and lasting complications for patients by at least a quarter. The audit, which will begin with the acute sector, will work alongside existing audits to gather information on prevalence and incidence of sepsis and be used to help measure the performance of trusts.
