September is shaping up to be a particularly strong month for movies on Disney+. Alongside the streamer's familiar Marvel and Star Wars franchises, the September lineup brings acclaimed animation, an Oscar-winning Quentin Tarantino movie, a Brad Pitt sports drama, and one of the biggest musicals of the last few years. The month's most notable arrival is also its newest.

Post-apocalyptic movies have always had an obvious appeal: destroy the world we recognize and see what people do with whatever is left. The best examples, though, aren't really about ruined cities or empty highways. Once normal life disappears, so do many of the rules that kept everyone behaving themselves. Ridley Scott has returned to that territory with The Dog Stars this weekend.

September is doing a lot of heavy lifting for HBO Max's movie library. The streamer is adding dozens of films on September 1, including everything from major Oscar winners to the beginnings of several horror franchises. There is enough arriving at once that deciding what to watch first may be the harder part. Horror fans are particularly well served as spooky season gets underway. Beetlejuice returns alongside Carrie, Pearl, MaXXXine, The Craft, and multiple Final Destination movies.
