Ignacio Guerrero drives his friend’s truck into the gravel driveway between two small bungalows that hold a barbershop and a psychic. He parks, walks around to the memorial along the stretch of sidewalk just in front of the barbershop on Canal Street. Some of the vases that hold fabric flowers tipped over in the night. He rights them. Someone left bouquets of real blooms, and he arranges them beside black-shrouded red roses in front of a canvas of the Virgen de Guadalupe.

Kerr County residents stood along Highway 39 as legislators drove to Camp Mystic. They held signs memorializing all 119 who died in the county. Sam Owens/San Antonio Express-News The post popped up on Alicia Baker’s Facebook newsfeed when she was scrolling on her phone. By the time she looked, it already had dozens of comments, some from people she recognized.
