Abstract Preserving barrier integrity is of great importance in mucosal tissues while simultaneously defending against inflammatory threats and exposures to pathogens. NK cells at barrier sites are essential for viral control during infections such as herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) but must also balance pathogen response with tissue protection. We have characterized human tissue NK cells in the vaginal tissue (VT) as having distinct effector and tissue protective functions.

When navigating academic medicine, a daunting task is entering into the world of scholarship. Junior faculty, residents, and medical students are often intimidated trying to find an entry point. Lack of experience, time, and knowledge of where to even begin are major hurdles. As hospitalists are often largely clinical, patient care is where scholarship can start. The people we care for every day are fundamental to our understanding of the practice of medicine.
