Metformin Use and Age-Related Macular Degeneration in Patients Without Diabetes Key Points Question Is there an association between the use of metformin and protection against the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among patients without diabetes? Findings In this case-control study of 231 142 cases with AMD and 232 879 matched controls, none of whom had a diagnosis of diabetes, metformin use was associated with 17% lower odds of AMD development.
