Satish Jha is a distinguished figure in Indian journalism and public discourse, whose career spans newspaper founding, editorial leadership, and contemporary commentary. He helped shape modern Hindi journalism in a way that fused people-centric reporting with analytical depth.
Born in 1957 in Madhubani, Bihar, India, Jha’s early interest in democratic activism and socio-political analysis was complemented by rigorous academic training — with an MA in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and an MBA from EDHEC Business School in France. He also pursued advanced studies at The Fletcher School (Tufts University), Harvard Kennedy School, and University of Maryland, strengthening his foundations in international policy and governance.
Jha’s journalism career began with The Indian Express Group, where he was instrumental in shaping editorial research and narrative strategies. In 1983, at a young age, he co-founded Jansatta — a national Hindi daily that quickly achieved significant circulation by marrying accessible language with incisive reporting.
Following Jansatta, he served as Editor-in-Chief of Dinaman, the Hindi weekly from The Times of India Group, becoming one of the youngest editors of a national publication — a testament to his editorial versatility and leadership.
He also co-founded the PUCL Bulletin, often recognised as India’s first civil rights journal, reflecting his commitment to social justice within media.
Beyond traditional newsrooms, Jha remains an active commentator. He writes columns and opinion pieces for platforms including Public India and hosts thought-leadership content under “Satish Jha Show,” reflecting his continued engagement with public affairs and global policy discourse.
While journalism defined his early career, Jha also ventured into corporate leadership and social technology. He held global roles in information systems with major corporations and co-founded several technology and social enterprise ventures focused on rural inclusion, renewable energy, healthcare platforms, and education.
