After a long hibernation, the Morgan Bears are set to return to the wrestling mat
Chauncy Wynn graduated from Morgan State in 1991 as a three-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference wrestling champion who was undefeated in league competition. Coached by the late James “Phil” Phillips, who died in July 2019, Wynn was also among the Bears’ four NCAA All-Americans for a program which earned Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles from 1963 to 1965 and 13 MEAC crowns.
2022-23 Baltimore Banner/VSN Wrestling Co-Coach of the Year: John Klessinger, South River
John Klessinger guided the South River to its second straight Class 4A state dual meet crown with a resounding, 42-28, triumph over Urbana of Frederick County in the state championship match on Feb. 11 at North Point High School in Waldorf. The 23rd-year coach also guided senior Sam Ditmars (145) to his first Class 4A-3A state championship at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on March 3-4 after being runner-up as a junior.
2022-23 Baltimore Banner/VSN Upper Weight Wrestler of the Year: AJ Rodrigues, South Carroll
AJ Rodrigues went 50-2 with 36 pins and seven technical falls on the way earning his fourth Carroll County title, his second regional crown and third Class 2A-1A state title, during the 2022-23 wrestling season. Among Rodrigues’ victories this year was a decision over Mount St. Joseph sophomore Ben Smith, a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and Maryland Private schools state champion.
Gilman’s Sherlock brothers, Tyson and Emitt, take first, third at NHSCA Nationals
Gilman junior Tyson Sherlock (132) finished first and his younger brother, sophomore Emmit Sherlock (145), placed third at the National High School Coaches’ Association National Wrestling Tournament over the weekend at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. While the 6-foot Tyson was a champion at this year’s NHSCAs after being a fourth as a freshman and a runner-up as a sophomore, the 6-foot-2 Emmitt was third after being a title winner a year ago.
Girls Wrestling State Tournament: Ugochi Anunobi earns second straight crown; five other locals capture titles
Westminster junior Taylor Mead transitioned to wrestling from the mixed martial arts octagon, Randallstown junior Ugochi Anunobi gave up indoor track for the mats, and Oakland Mills senior Jada Fowler decided to wrestle four years ago at the suggestion of a friend. Yet another girl, Manchester Valley junior Faith Day, has been on the wrestling mats since childhood, being the daughter of a former state champion and the granddaughter of a nationally recognized coach.
Centennial’s Calvin Kraisser wins his second 4A/3A state wrestling title
Centennial sophomore Calvin Kraisser came from behind to win his second straight Class 4A-3A state title by decking Clarksville of Montgomery County junior Jonathan Chang with 21 seconds left in their 138-pound championship match at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro on Saturday night. Kraisser (34-2) trailed, 2-0, entering the second period after Chang’s takedown 30 seconds into the match, but he reversed Chang in the second period to tie the bout at 2-2 entering the third.
Girls state wrestling tournament state preview
Arundel High junior Jada Chaves baby sits the five and eight-year-old sons of assistant wrestling coach Jeff Blachly, a former heavyweight state champion for the Wildcats in 1999 who alternately coaches Chaves to achieve success on the mat against teenage boys. Chaves did just that during the Anne Arundel County Tournament on Feb. 18, earning fifth place at 106 pounds with a 9-0 decision over Annapolis sophomore Carmine Zimmerelli.

Manchester Valley crowned three senior champions at last weekend’s Class 2A-1A West Regional tournament with Travis Green (152), Class 2A-1A state champion Jake Boog (170) and Derek Martin (285) winning regional titles. If you don’t know who Victor Marks-Jenkins is, you’ll likely get to know him after this weekend’s Class 4A-3A state tournament at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. Marks-Jenkins is a 145-pound freshman at Perry Hall High School with a record of 46-0 with 38 pins, two technical falls and one major decision heading into the event. Marks-Jenkins won the Baltimore County tournament following an 8-1 decision that dethroned sophomore defending champion Russell Fary of Sparrows Point.

Broadneck High crowned senior champions Liam DeBaugh (160) and Dax Avila (195) along with sophomore Cam Williams (113) and had a runner-up in senior Jake Chambers (182) among the eight Bruins’ wrestlers who qualified for next weekend’s Class 4A-3A state tournament by placing within the top four of their weight classes at the East Region tourney at South River Saturday.

Northeast-AA freshman Beau Schmidt wants to give himself an early birthday present by winning this weekend’s Class 2A-1A West Region’s 132-pound title at Manchester Valley. If victorious, Schmidt will focus on the Class 2A-1A state tournament, to be held on March 3-4 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro of Prince George’s County. “It would be a great birthday present,” said Schmidt, who turns 15 on Feb. 28.
Franklin’s Justin Signor wrestled with the strength of two men in winning his Baltimore County title
When Justin Signor stepped on the mats for the Baltimore County Tournament last weekend at Dundalk High, it was as if the 160-pound Franklin High senior was grappling with the strength of two men. For even as he grieved the passing of his father, Joel, on Feb. 3 at the age of 50 from a more than three-year-long battle with colon cancer, Signor remained focused on keeping the promise he made to his parents and 20-year-old sister, Emily, to carry on.

South River’s Alex Szkotnicki wins the Anne Arundel County wrestling tournament
South River senior Alexandra Szkotnicki earned a 1-0 decision over Broadneck sophomore Cam Williams in their 113-pound bout to become only the second female to win an Anne Arundel County title at Broadneck High on Saturday night. Szkotnicki (42-5, 29 pins) escaped with 25 seconds left in the second period, following a scoreless first period and rode out Williams (26-3) for the remainder of the match.

Challenging the boys, Arundel’s Alex Szkotnicki hopes to make wrestling history
Alexandra Szkotnicki was two years old when Montgomery County freshman Helen Maroulis made an impact in March 2006, becoming the first girl to place at the Maryland wrestling championships with a sixth place finish at 112 pounds in the 4A-3A state tournament. In 2007, Arundel High senior Nicole Woody (103) made more history by becoming Maryland’s first girl to win an Anne Arundel County and regional title and to finish as a Class 4A-3A state runner-up.
South Carroll repeats in Class 1A state wrestling duals
WALDORF, MARYLAND – A 2001 graduate of South Carroll, Bryan Hamper was twice a state champion and twice a fourth-place finisher at states. Hamper later coached his alma mater to Class 2A-1A state tournament titles in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 before the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association ceased scoring the state tournament in 2018.
South River repeats as 4A state duals wrestling champion
South River entered the season as defending Class 4A state dual champions, but there were times particularly last month when the Seahawks seemed vulnerable to being dethroned. First, South River lost to Anne Arundel County rival Chesapeake in December. Then January featured a pair of setbacks to private school power Loyola and Sparrows Point at the Iron Horse Duals, along with a 40-25 loss to their Anne Arundel County neighbor the Broadneck Bruins.
Annapolis pull upset in state duals quarters; Glenelg prevails
Annapolis Junior Jack Nicka (170) trailed by five points with four bouts left when his third period pin gave the visiting fifth seeded Panthers a 39-32 revenge upset victory at fourth-seeded Old Mill in Tuesday night’s Class 4A East Regional quarterfinal. Nicka returned for his first match of the season, having been injured in practice prior to the Panthers’ initial bout of the season.
Annapolis’ Nik Antonelli is turning up the heat on the mat
Nik Antonelli is turning up the heat in anticipation of his final career run at the postseason. The Annapolis senior “took down” assistant coach Tyler Scarinzi “a couple of times” at Monday’s practice, which is a rare occurrence against a man who was a former private schools state champion in three title-bout appearances at Archbishop Curley before graduating in 2008. “I think he’s all-around more confident and overall a little bit more aggressive on his feet,” said Scarinzi, 32.

Just one point separated River Hill junior Dylan McCullough from a Class 4A-3A state championship and an undefeated season. One point and Churchill of Montgomery County senior Jaden Selby, whom McCullough allowed to build an early four-point lead in last year’s 170-pound clash at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. McCullough entered with a 34-0 record before falling to Selby, who held off the Hawks’ wrestler to win, 7-6.

Queen Anne’s girls’ wrestling team continued to make history with Saturday’s resounding 48-24 dual meet victory in an all-female dual meet at Walter Johnson of Montgomery County. Already the first-ever all-girls’ wrestling team in the Bayside Conference, and boasting their program’s initial female state champion in sophomore Ally Conley (110), the Lions went on the road to claim their school’s first-ever dual meet win in an all-girls’ wrestling competition.

Senior Amondre Wooden of Owings Mills is making up for lost time, and his opponents are paying the price. The 152-pound senior is 16-1 with 13 pins, two technical falls and a major decision, his lone setback being a 5-3 decision to state qualifier Chase Crutchley of Highland High School in Medina, Ohio, in the 157-pound finals of last weekend’s Top Gun Tournament at Alliance High School in Alliance, Ohio.

Freshman Dominic Gray (120), junior Chris Nice (145) and seniors Gavin McDowell (138), Savion Rickets (182) and Cade Zengel (195) all went 8-0 to lead Bel Air to the crown at the 15-team Tomahawk Duals Tournament at Havre De Grace High last weekend. McDowell had four pins and a technical fall to improve to 27-3 on the year and was named Outstanding Lowerweight Wrestler.
Queen Anne’s is making girls wrestling history
Ally Conley has the distinction of being the first female state champion in the history of Queen Anne’s County High School on the first-ever all-girls’ wrestling team in the Bayside Conference, while teammate Bree Conard is carrying on a family tradition. Conley, a 100-pound sophomore, and Conard, a 125-pound freshmen, also embrace the notoriety shared by their coach, David Stricker, and their Lions’ teammates, making them more driven than ever.

Chesapeake-AA’s Wrestling Room To Be Renamed In Honor of Matt Eveleth
Chesapeake-Anne Arundel County’s wrestling room will be renamed on Wednesday in honor of late alumnus Matthew Tobey Eveleth, a four-time Class 4A-3A state finalist and three-time champion. The youngest of three siblings, all of whom were state title winners for the Cougars, Eveleth was 37 when he died of pancreatic cancer in July 2021 as the most accomplished wrestler in the history of Chesapeake High.

Glenelg’s senior Class 2A-1A state runner-up Ethan Sotka won a 9-3 decision over Sepanta Ahanj-Elias of Bullis for the 160-pound title at Wednesday’s 13-team Damascus Holiday Invitational Tournament. Sotka was among six wrestlers who placed within the top four for the sixth-place Gladiators (51 points), with third-place finishers in sophomore Isaac Choi (132) and seniors Leo Conti (182) and Max Dail (220), and freshman Jonathan Sexton (113) and senior Travis Goodman being fourth.

Seniors Ben Travers (145) and Sam Ditmars (152) went undefeated last weekend to lead defending Class 4A state dual meet champion South River of Anne Aruncel County to the crown in the Warriors’ Duals at LaPlata High in Charles County. Travis won eight bouts and Ditmars seven for the Seahawks, who went 8-0 overall to improve to 13-0 on the season. Travis is 12-1 on the year and Ditmars is 12-0.
