How to Think Like a Woman | Grove Atlantic
As a young woman growing up in small-town Iowa, Regan Penaluna daydreamed about the big questions: Who are we and what is this strange world we find ourselves in? In college she fell in love with philosophy and chose to pursue it as an academician, the first step, she believed, to becoming a self-determined person living a life of the mind.
What Can I Give My Cashier Friend at Christmas?
Jeff Greenberg/UIG via Getty Images A Schnucks grocery store, St. Louis, Missouri, 2014 “No tomatoes today?” I was surprised when the cashier at Schnucks asked me this question, on that early morning about a year ago. I remember because it was a couple of days after the winter break, and here we are now counting down to another New Year’s Eve. “No, no tomatoes today,” I replied with a smile she couldn’t see hidden beneath my mask.
Advanced Hebrew with an Arabic Accent
On August 7, 2021, we published Sayed Kashua’s essay “My Palestinian Diaspora,” a reflection on living as a Hebrew-speaking, Muslim Israeli Arab in the American Midwest, with the sadness and guilt of voluntary exile and the alienation of a deracinated immigrant.
My Palestinian Diaspora
On the day my brother called, the local news reported a bear sighting in a backyard in Richmond Heights, the Missouri suburb where we live. Another round of fighting had broken out between Israelis and Palestinians, exactly seven years after the bloody cycle of 2014, which was the summer my wife and I decided to leave our home in Jerusalem. We were spurred by political despair and a loss of hope for a better future.
Palestinian cast of Israeli movie to boycott Cannes Film Festival
Cannes – The cast of “Let It Be Morning,” Israeli director Eran Kolirin’s new film premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this Saturday, has decided not to attend the French Film Festival. The production team explained to Haaretz that this is not a boycott of the festival, but a political statement on the part of the Palestinian-Israeli actors who star in Let There Be Morning.

Hailed as “one of the funniest things in Britain . . . funnier even than Prince Charles’s ears’ (People), John O’Farrell, one of Britain‘s best-selling authors, has written a laugh-out-loud take on the insanity of modern parenting. Alice never imagined she would end up like this, so anxious after hearing about the dangers of meteorites that she makes her children wear bike helmets in the wading pool.
The Perils of Lockdown Living
The Perils of Lockdown Living Musee des Beaux-Arts, Tours, France/Bridgeman ImagesJoseph Marcellin Combette: Portrait of a Family, 1800–1801 It took me six years from when we moved from Jerusalem to the US, but, thanks to the pandemic, I finally wrote my first poem in English. I was so excited the day I submitted it, not able to sleep the whole night awaiting the response from my third-grade son’s English teacher. “Did she write a comment in Google Classroom yet?” I asked my son, repeatedly.

Opinion | Israel Doesn’t Want to Be My State
Israel’s message to its Arab citizens is that it does not wish to be our state. Moreover, it prefers to be the state of people who were born elsewhere, who do not speak its language, have never visited it or paid it taxes or served it in any way. The State of Israel will welcome these foreigners, wherever they are from, as long as they are considered Jewish by Orthodox Jewish law.
How a Netflix Hit Sanitizes the Israeli Occupation of the West Bank
The producers of the Israeli television drama Fauda launched the second season of their popular show late last year with an ominous billboard campaign.
Welcome to the Israeli Arab ghetto
Why do these shootings keep happening in your communities, I'm asked sometimes. That's what happens, I respond, when the state ignores your existence, and violence mediated by criminals is used to resolve disputes.
Sharp | Grove Atlantic
The ten brilliant women who are the focus of Sharp came from different backgrounds and had vastly divergent political and artistic opinions. But they all made a significant contribution to the cultural and intellectual history of America and ultimately changed the course of the twentieth century, in spite of the men who often undervalued or dismissed their work.

Book Review | Colonialism and the Jews
Jews, like other peoples, have been much affected by the history of colonialism and empire. The Babylonian exile and the Roman dispersal were formative in constructing Jewish identity. Life within the Islamic empires stamped the experience of Mizrahi Jews in much the same way as, later, life in the Tsarist and Austro-Hungarian Empires molded the experience of the Jews of Europe.

A Country That Never Wanted Me
Last Saturday night, the Jewish-Arab Hand in Hand bilingual school in Jerusalem was set on fire. Two first-grade classrooms were destroyed completely. Charred frames of the little chairs on which Jewish and Arab children had sat beside each other — chairs where my children who attended that same school had sat — littered the floor along with half-burned coats and books, in Arabic and Hebrew.

Raymond Chandler | Grove Atlantic
Raymond Chandler is an uncensored look at the tortured man who wrote the classic mystery novels The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. Using recently uncovered archival materials, including personal papers and correspondence, biographer Thomas Hiney vividly evokes Chandler’s early years in Nebraska, his education in England and on the corrupt streets of Los Angeles, and his later years as a novelist and screenwriter in the heyday of the Hollywood studio system.

Preparing My Kids for the New America
In 2014, when I moved with my family from Jerusalem to a pleasant Midwestern town, I promised myself that, come what may, I wouldn’t get emotionally involved with America. As a Palestinian who’d lived for years as a minority in West Jerusalem, the city’s Jewish side, I’d grown increasingly fearful for the safety of my family in Israel.
