Practical Applications Understanding how changes in water content affect the strength of infill materials within rock fractures is critical for the safe design, construction, and long-term stability of slopes, tunnels, foundations, and other rock structures. This study provides a new practical model to predict how drying and wetting cycles impact the shear strength of fractures filled with fine-grained soils.

However, the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms by which the degree of saturation impacts the volumetric deformation of soils during seismic loading is still not mature. Consequently, it is critical to develop and calibrate seismic compression models while considering these mechanisms.
