1 Introduction The ocean has absorbed about 90% of the energy accumulated in the earth system due to the human-induced increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (Gulev et al., 2021; von Schuckmann et al., 2020), with the upper ocean warming faster than the deep ocean. This results in an increase of the upper ocean stratification (Yamaguchi & Suga, 2019).
