Fontana Sports runs for a cause
People are literally running out the door at Fontana Sports Specialties — the venerable, locally owned outdoor store on Henry Street, directly off of Madison’s State Street — but the exodus is for a cause. Each week, starting in the spring and running through the fall, Fontana hosts a Wednesday run for $5 per person, with the proceeds going to some of Madison’s well-known nonprofit organizations. The regular event debuted in 2025, and plans are for it to continue.
Volunteers: The not-so-secret weapon of nonprofits
When Liz Smith first moved to Madison from the Pacific Northwest she was looking for ways to get involved in her community. A longtime participant in volunteerism, Smith soon found her calling. "I got involved (in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County) through my friend Melissa,” said Smith, who was first matched with her Little Sister Journey in May 2025.
Bob Queen remembered as king of Madison festival music and community pioneer
During the Willy Street Festival on Saturday, there was a moment of silence on the main stage as the Rolling Stones cover band, Loving Cup, was about to begin its set. Band members bowed their heads and held hands in honor of Bob Queen. Queen, who died Sept. 15 at age 76, was considered the innovator of the near east side free music festivals, such as the Waterfront Festival, Orton Park Festival, La Fete de Marquette and more.
Surge of 'Made in USA' Class Actions Up Pressure on Companies to Toe the Line on Marketing Claims
The landscape of privacy-related class action litigation is undergoing significant transformation in 2025, with three key statutes taking center stage: 1. Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA); 2. California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA); and 3. Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). This article breaks down recent decisions, new theories from the plaintiffs’ bar, and regulatory developments changing the scope and application of these decades-old privacy laws.
DHS Requests 20,000 National Guard Members to Help With Immigration Crackdown
WASHINGTON -- The Department of Homeland Security has requested more than 20,000 National Guard members to help with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, according to two U.S. officials with knowledge of the plans. The request to the Defense Department came after President Donald Trump asked the Department of Homeland Security last week to increase its ranks by pulling in 20,000 officers from state or federal agencies.

Payroll Errors Have a Human Cost: How to Save the Day
Earlier this year, actor Tom Hollander — famed for his role as Cutler Beckett in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, in addition to other films and TV shows — revealed he mistakenly received a “seven-figure” paycheck belonging to the similarly named (albeit more famous) Tom Holland, aka The Avengers era Spider-Man. While it’s no surprise this story made headlines, we can’t all be superheroes or box-office megastars who likely don’t need to be worried about a delayed check.

They campaigned. They got elected. Then on Tuesday, the three newest members of the Bexar Appraisal District’s board of directors finally received some guidance on what they’ve signed themselves up for. The new elected positions were created by the state Legislature to offer taxpayers more insight into the property appraisal process, but the actual job description was loosely defined, at best.

The San Antonio Report's 2022 Year in Photos
The past two years, I have written a similar message for this annual tradition of mine. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our annual Year in Photos collection took on a dark tone, becoming a recollection of horrific events, sorrow and loss for the San Antonio community. In 2022, we witnessed tragedy again. The senseless act of gun violence that left 21 dead, 19 of them children, in Uvalde, Texas in May.

In the days that followed, San Antonio Report photojournalists Nick Wagner and Bria Woods documented the tragedy, its fallout and the efforts of two communities to understand the unthinkable and to grieve.
