SMITHFIELD — For Johnston County Registrar of Deeds Craig Olive and his blended family, Alzheimer’s disease is personal. He and his kin have seen the disease ravage parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Olive lost his mother, Pearl Thompson Brown Olive, to Alzheimer’s in 2007. “She helped raise 15 children altogether — stepchildren and her own,” he recalls in an interview from his office in the Johnston County Courthouse. But Pearl was more than his mom.

A new park is taking shape in Clayton

CLAYTON — A park on a former landfill is moving forward. “The first effort is really the site remediation,” Chris Gallant, Clayton’s capital program manager, told the Town Council recently. “That’s the remediation of the site from the dump itself.” The state is handling that work, which is largely done, Gallant said. Crews have excavated any tainted soil and installed a closure surface, or cap, over the landfill.

Clayton unveils interactive budget book

CLAYTON — Town residents who want a closer look at where their tax dollars go now have a new tool at their fingertips. Budget manager Todd Melton told the Town Council on Sept. 15 that the annual budget book, once only available as a static PDF, is now an interactive, web-based document. That was a goal he and Town Manager Rich Cappola set when Melton joined the Clayton staff. “One of the first conversations we had was that we wanted to improve the budget book document,” Melton said.
