Why did you become a journalist?
I almost feel like I didn't have a choice. Writing is an affliction.

I wrote about travel for my high school newspaper, of course!
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Anything that gets even mildly plagiarized by somebody else.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Take editorial criticism, don't write for free, and ask for more money if requested revisions go way over agreed-upon word count.
When's the best time to pitch you?
First thing in the morning, and right after lunch.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
A random offer to visit Mazatlan in October for a culinary festival. Done, and done.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I was once offered a breastmilk pump to test out. I was tempted to take it and say it didn't work.

Diet Pepsi or an Espresso Martini

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That I render judgments about hotels. Anybody can go to Yelp for that. I'm telling a story.
