Valley City Legion Baseball Books Ticket to State Tourney
By Scott Nulph KINDRED, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Royals capped off an impressive run at the N.D. Class A State East Region Baseball Tournament by beating the Fargo Astros 8-2 on Saturday to earn the team a spot in the state tournament beginning Friday in Jamestown. Valley City, now 15-17 on the season, will play West No. 1 seed Jamestown in a first-round game at 7 p.m. on Friday at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown.
Ruling Class 4A
CASPER — Madison Legerski looked calm as she waited for the final ruling in the Class 4A girls high jump during the first day of the state track and field meet on Thursday. The Laramie High junior had left the high-jump pit thinking she had won in a jump-off against two Casper Kelly Walsh girls. But a half hour later, no decision had been announced: KW’s coaches disagreed with how the officials handled the ruling of a jump-off. But, in the end, Legerski had her state title.
Confident Cowgirls eager for deep tourney run
LARAMIE – It always comes up this time of year for the University of Wyoming women’s basketball team. With all the success the program has enjoyed over the 16 years since Joe Legerski took over the program, the Cowgirls have never played in the postseason conference championship game, let alone win it. Last season they came oh-so-close, falling 67-63 to Nevada in the semifinals.
Wyoming confident entering Big 12 tourney
LARAMIE – Mark Branch hasn’t been shy about saying his ultimate goal is getting 10 University of Wyoming wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. Although extremely difficult, it’s been Branch’s dream since taking over the wrestling program in 2008. It appears that dream is getting closer to reality. The Cowboys enter this weekend’s Big 12 Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with eight of their 10 wrestlers seeded sixth or higher.
UW’s Henderson one of nation’s top jumpers
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming senior Ja’la Henderson has established herself as one of the top jumpers in the nation. But those were the expectations UW had for the Dayton, Ohio, product when it recruited her. Now, as Henderson goes through her final season with the Cowgirls, those expectations have been raised. As UW associate head coach/jumps and hurdles coach Quincy Howe says, her floor is pretty high.
Gomez lights up Spartans' defense
The University of Wyoming Cowgirls got the tears out of the way early Monday during their Senior Night celebration prior to playing San Jose State at the Arena-Auditorium. Then Cowgirls senior Marta Gomez brought the Spartans to tears in the third quarter. Gomez torched the San Jose defense for 17 points in the third quarter – all coming in the first eight minutes – to give UW some breathing room en route to a an 85-56 win before a crowd of 2,932.
Getting to this point: Cowgirl seniors have taken different paths
Marta Gomez came to the University of Wyoming women’s basketball program as a shooter who had a big adjustment picking up coach Joe Legerski’s defensive mentality. Bailee Cotton arrived at UW already skilled at the defensive end of the floor, but needing development on offense. Clara Tapia showed up with UW in major need of a point guard.
Cowgirls get back to basics after streak snapped
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming women's basketball team beat Air Force fairly handily on Feb. 6, building a 25-point lead en route to an 80-60 win. The win was part of UW’s recent nine-game winning streak in the Mountain West, and also exacted a bit of revenge from a late-season loss at Air Force the season before. But it didn’t take all the sting away from losing that game almost exactly one year ago.
Cowboys start home stretch against Air Force
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming men’s basketball team has won two games since 2019 began. And you thought maybe you had a rough start to the New Year. The Cowboys (6-22 overall, 2-13 Mountain West) return home after a week-long road trip to host Air Force (12-15, 7-8) at 2 p.m. today at the Arena-Auditorium. UW will play two of its final three regular-season games at home, including the regular-season finale March 9 against New Mexico, sandwiched around a road game Wednesday at San Jose State.
UW tennis team coming home after stop in Casper
The University of Wyoming women’s tennis team is coming home. But first a stop in Casper. UW has spent the first seven weeks of the spring tennis season on the road, playing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Spokane, Washington. The Cowgirls went 5-5 in the 10 duals, with three of the losses coming against ranked opponents. Now it’s time for some home matches – eight straight to be exact – following a “home” dual at 5:30 p.m. today against Montana State in Casper.
Cowgirls turn ball over late against Fresno State in rare loss
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming women's basketball team was 6-3 this season in games decided by seven points or less. In those six wins, UW probably snuck away with a win or two maybe they shouldn’t have. After nine straight wins, the Cowgirls found out Wednesday what it was like to be on the other end of one of those games.
Cowboys focused on Bulldogs after blowout loss at Colorado State
LARAMIE – How do you respond after losing to your rival by the most points in series history? You have members of the team let everyone know that a performance like that is not acceptable. That’s how the University of Wyoming Cowboys handled losing 83-48 at Colorado State on Saturday. “JJ (Justin James) and his leadership, he spoke up,” Cowboys coach Allen Edwards said Monday. “(Hunter) Maldonado spoke up, and Tariq (Johnson) spoke up, as well.
Diver Ryan Russi leads Cowboys' repeat bid
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming senior Ryan Russi doesn’t look at himself as the favorite in diving heading into the Western Athletic Conference Championships today through Saturday in Houston, Texas. But the rest of the field probably does. Russi – WAC Diver of the Week four different times this season – will lead the Cowboys in defense of their conference championship, which was won last season for the first time in 59 years.
Erjavec, Weidemann have helped Cowgirls defense improve
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski has figured out through the years that it takes time for incoming players to learn how and how hard to play defense for the Cowgirls. Except this season. That exception is a big reason why the Cowgirls (18-5 overall, 11-3 Mountain West) are in second place in the conference and riding a nine-game winning streak into today’s 6:30 p.m. game against Fresno State (17-9 overall, 10-5 MW) at the Arena-Auditorium.
Cowgirls’ path to MW title not easy
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming women's basketball certainly wasn’t talking about a potential Mountain West regular-season championship back in early January. A 2-3 start to the conference season had the team more worried about a top-half finish than a top overall spot. But nine straight wins will change the way a team looks at things. With four games left in the regular season, the Cowgirls (18-5 overall, 11-3 MW) are tied for second place with New Mexico and one game back of Boise State.
Defense big reason for Cowgirls' recent success
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski left the Arena-Auditorium on Jan. 19 feeling like a defensive change was needed. Watching the video of that night’s 78-75 loss to New Mexico confirmed that feeling. “We came in after the New Mexico game, and I told my staff that we were going to make some adjustments of what we did defensively and we have done that,” Legerski said. “That’s really improved over the last month.” Being improved is understating things.
Murdock, Starzinski get head start as golf schedule begins
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming golfers John Murdock IV and Dan Starzinski were able to get a jump on the spring season by competing in the Collegiate Showcase at the PGA Tour’s Genesis Open last week. They played with PGA Tour pro Peter Malnati in the one-round event which featured 20 of the top collegiate golfers in the country. “We got so lucky with being paired with (Malnati),” Murdock said. “He was so gracious and just seeing the way he acted the whole round was awesome to watch.
UW’s Frketich is top weight thrower in MW
LARAMIE – Hap Frketich quickly admits he’s not like other throwers when it comes to track and field. Frketich, in his junior season from Oregon City, Oregon, likes the weight throw for the indoor season. Actually, he really likes it. “I like the weight throw and hammer equally,” Frketich said. “Probably most throwers wouldn’t agree with that. I’ve always liked the weight throw. It’s probably one of my favorite events within the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Cowgirls swimmers confident heading into Mountain West meet
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming swimming coach Dave Denniston knows what a championship team looks like. Denniston led the UW men’s team to the Western Athletic Conference title last season behind a blend of a few top-level athletes and plenty of depth. “Our women’s team is built that way, too,” Denniston said. “Our strength is our depth, the same way the men won the conference championship last year.
Cowgirls have built winning streak in part to not getting rattled
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming women’s basketball team has been near the top of the Mountain West standings each of the last three seasons. The Cowgirls finished second by two games to Colorado State in 2016-17 only after then-junior Liv Roberts was lost for the season with a knee injury with six games to play. Last season, UW played for the MW title on the final day of the regular season, losing at home to Boise State, which dropped it to third.
Cowboys need Taylor to continue to take steps forward
There weren’t many positives from the University of Wyoming’s 33-point loss to No. 7-ranked Nevada last Saturday. But if there was one, it was Trevon “T.J.” Taylor. The true freshman wing scored 13 points, including nine during the first half, and tied a career-best with eight rebounds. Taylor also had only one turnover in 37 minutes. Third-year coach Allen Edwards described Taylor’s play as “taking a step forward,” for him and the program.
No. 12 Cowboys close regular season at UNC
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming wrestling team has pretty much everything decided as it ends the regular season at 7 tonight at Northern Colorado. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to wrestle for, though. The 12th-ranked Cowboys (15-4 overall, 5-2 Big 12) can finish the regular season with the second-most dual wins in program history with a victory. And there’s still room for moving up or down the Big 12 seeding chart.
Cowgirls winning with talent, experience and a little toughness
LARAMIE – You hear the term “Cowboy Tough” throughout the University of Wyoming athletic programs, meant for both the men’s and women’s teams. The Cowgirls basketball program is adding a little bit to that slogan this season. UW (15-5 overall, 8-3 Mountain West) has won six consecutive games during league play coming into today’s game at 3 p.m. at Nevada (8-14, 4-7).
Cowgirls extend winning streak to six games
LARAMIE – There wasn’t much aesthetically pleasing about Wednesday night’s Mountain West women’s basketball game between for the University of Wyoming and Utah State. Except the result. The Cowgirls survived their second-worst half offensively – the worst also came against Utah State – and outscored the Aggies 34-17 in the second half en route to a 53-35 victory before a crowd of 2,400 at the Arena-Auditorium.
Cowgirls host Utah State riding 5-game winning streak
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming women’s basketball team has been the hottest team in the Mountain West since mid January. The Cowgirls (14-5 overall, 7-3 MW) have reeled off five straight wins, including three on the road. Even in the team’s losses this season, there really hasn’t been a time when UW left the arena shaking its head wondering what happened – except one. The Cowgirls get a rematch with that team today at 6:30 p.m. at the Arena-Auditorium.
Cowgirls ran game plan to perfection and dominated Rams
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming women's basketball team disproved a sports myth Saturday. The saying goes that you can’t win a game in the first quarter. But the Cowgirls may have done just that against the Colorado State Rams. UW (14-5 overall, 7-3 Mountain West) came out and blitzed CSU (8-14, 2-9) over the first 10 minutes to lead 16-2 at one point. The final 30 minutes of the game were a draw, with the Cowgirls winning by 11 at 60-49 for the team’s fifth straight win.
Cowgirls, Gomez remain red hot by beating CSU
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Marta Gomez is in one of those “can’t miss” modes basketball players dream about. About the only thing that could stop the University of Wyoming senior Saturday at Colorado State was her own coach. Gomez was 7 of 8 from the field – 4 of 5 on 3-pointers – to lead the Cowgirls with 20 points during a 60-49 victory over the Rams in the first of two Border War meetings this season.
UW wrestling sends seniors off on high note
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming wrestling coach Mark Branch was pretty sure senior Brock George had lost all feeling nearing the end of his match Sunday. “I don’t think he could see, I don’t think he could hear, I don’t think he could smell, taste or breathe,” Branch joked following George’s win at 125 pounds on Senior Day for the Cowboys at the UniWyo Sports Complex. “He came out with so much energy and was amped up. We saw him fading and I could tell it was all heart at the end.
Murdock, Starzinski play for spot in PGA event
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming golfers John Murdock IV and San Starzinski have already played one U.S. Open course during their collegiate careers – the Olympic Club in San Francisco last summer during the Pacific Coast Amateur. Monday, the two Cowboys will get their chance at another U.S. Open layout, and with the possibility of playing in a PGA Tour event as the main prize.
Cowgirls try for rare Moby winning streak
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming put together a memorable video to celebrate Cowgirls coach Joe Legerski’s 300th win prior to Wednesday’s game with Air Force. Included was a long list of past players wishing the veteran congratulations for achieving the milestone. Among them were two of the best to ever play for Legerski – Hillary Carlson and Aubrey Vandiver. They played for Legerski from 2007-11 and were part of 85 of Legerski’s now 302 victories.
Ashworth gets more than one senior moment
University of Wyoming senior wrestler Branson Ashworth is about to live an experience most college wrestlers simply don’t get. Sunday is Senior Day for the Cowboys against South Dakota State at 2 p.m. at the UniWyo Sports Complex. But first, the Cowboys have a Big 12 road dual at Utah Valley at 7 p.m. today. Utah Valley is in Orem, Utah, about 20 miles from Ashworth’s hometown of Spanish Fork. So before Ashworth celebrates Senior Day, he’ll get to celebrate a senior homecoming of sorts.
Cowboys go after more indoor records
While still in high school, Chris Henry would train for the indoor track season inside War Memorial Fieldhouse, the home of the University of Wyoming indoor track and field teams. There, Henry would often look at the top-10 records for the Cowboys and hope he’d be able to etch his name in a few of them by the time he was done at UW. Saturday, the former Laramie High standout did better than just put his name inside the top 10.
Cowgirls score at will in paint to beat Air Force
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming Cowgirls celebrated coach Joe Legerski’s 300th win prior to hosting Air Force on Wednesday at the Arena-Auditorium. Win No. 302 may have looked easy on the scoreboard, but it was anything but. The Cowgirls jumped on the Falcons early, using a 14-0 run for a 26-12 lead, then kept Air Force at arm’s length for the rest of the game in an 80-60 win before a crowd of 2,460.
Cowgirls start final stretch against Falcons
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming Cowgirls just finished an eight-game stretch to start the Mountain West schedule by playing six games against the top five teams in the standings. The Cowgirls (12-5 overall, 5-3 MW) won three straight to finish the stretch 5-3. Now comes the hard part. UW hosts Air Force at 6:30 p.m. today at the Arena-Auditorium coming off its final bye of the conference schedule. What lies ahead is a 10-game stretch over the final 30 days of the regular season.
Cowgirls come out of January in MW title hunt
LARAMIE – Most teams wouldn’t be excited about going 2-3 over a five-game stretch. The University of Wyoming women’s basketball team might be the exception. The Cowgirls (12-5 overall, 5-3 Mountain West) have opened conference play with what 16-year coach Joe Legerski called one of the most difficult early schedules he can remember. The eight teams the UW played – counting Boise State twice – combined for a record of 33-25 in league play.
Cowboy wrestling heads west for doubleheader
LARAMIE – When you think doubleheaders, you normally think baseball. But wrestling? Not so much. The eighth-ranked University of Wyoming wrestling team will change that – at least for a day Sunday – when it wrestles two duals against different opponents in two different cities.
UW indoor track and field will compete in Colorado
LARAMIE – Two weeks remain in the regular season for the University of Wyoming indoor track and field teams. Last week, UW coach Bryan Berryhill said it’s time for his athletes to begin final preparations for the upcoming Mountain West Championships Feb. 21-23 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This weekend, the Cowboys and Cowgirls do just that by participating in the Colorado Open in Boulder, Colorado.
Erjavec has been one of Cowgirls top players since MW play started
LARAMIE – Karla Erjavec’s start to her University of Wyoming women’s basketball career was much like any freshman – inconsistent. Erjavec – who has started every game this season – scored 13 points in her second game as a Cowgirl at St. Mary’s and topped that with an 18-point performance in a close home win over Denver. The Zagreb, Croatia, native also had five games of five points or less in nonconference play. But since Mountain West play started Jan.
Cowgirls' Legerski looks back at 300 wins
LARAMIE – Joe Legerski can remember his first win like it was yesterday, but not necessarily for the reason you might think. Legerski’s first victory as coach of the University of Wyoming women’s basketball team was a 62-51 win over Montana State-Billings in the Casper Shootout on Dec. 13, 2003, snapping a five-game losing streak to start his career as a head coach. It took another three games for Legerski to win his first game at the Arena-Auditorium.
Cowgirls continue to look for right mix on offense
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski loves balance. He loves the kind of balance with a basketball team that makes it almost impossible for a defense to guard. “When you have more people scoring, it’s tougher to defend,” he said. “When we have balance on offense, we’re a tough team to stop.” The Cowgirls (10-5 overall, 3-3 Mountain West) will need balance when they host Boise State (15-2, 6-0) at 1 p.m. today at the Arena-Auditorium.
UW indoor track heads north to Gillette
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming indoor track and field teams’ annual trek north to Gillette takes place Saturday as UW hosts Montana State in the Powder River Dual. Saturday marks the fifth consecutive season UW will run in Gillette. “The Campbell County Rec Center does a really good job hosting this competition,” UW track coach Bryan Berryhill said. “It’s been an enjoyable meet for our student-athletes.
Cowgirls face MW’s biggest 3-point chuckers
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming women’s basketball team is No. 2 in the country in 3-point shooting at 42.1 percent. The Cowgirls also have played against some of the top 3-point shooting teams in Denver (third), Boise State (14th) and Idaho (44th). San Jose State is next up on that list for UW, as the Cowgirls (9-5 overall, 2-3 Mountain West) play at SJSU (1-15, 0-5) at 8 p.m. today in San Jose, California. The Spartans might not be one of the top 3-point shooting teams in terms of percentage.
Cowgirls battling brutal early MW schedule
LARAMIE – Every college basketball team will find a way to tell you their conference schedule is much harder than your conference schedule. But when the University of Wyoming women talk that way, they mean it. The Cowgirls (9-5 overall, 2-3 Mountain West) are below .500 in league play after five games for the first time since the 2015-16 season. But it’s not because of lack of effort.
Cowgirls have sped up offense this season
LARAMIE – Playing quick, but not in a hurry. The University of Wyoming women’s basketball team has done more of that offensively than in past seasons through the team’s first 13 games. The Cowgirls (9-4 overall, 2-2 Mountain West) enter today’s game at 2 p.m. against New Mexico (14-2, 4-1) at the Arena-Auditorium averaging 72.8 points per contest. That average would rank fifth all-time at UW, and is just 1.9 points off the record of 74.7 set during the 1979-80 season.
Cowboys wrestling continues to roll in duals despite its youth
LARAMIE – Nobody in college wrestling gets a big, shiny trophy for winning a bunch of duals. Yet the way the season is structured, dual results are one of the main ways to determine how good a team is. That being said, the University of Wyoming Cowboys have been very good this season. The Cowboys (10-3 overall, 1-1 Big 12) have won six straight duals and eight of their last nine.
Wyoming track starts hectic indoor schedule
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams begin the sprint to the Mountain West Championships on Saturday at the NDSU Team Challenge in Fargo, North Dakota. The meet will be the first of four for the team over the next month, leading up to the MW meet Feb. 21-23 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “It’s a good baseline for us,” UW track and field coach Bryan Berryhill said.
Cowboys pull out win over Oregon State
LARAMIE – Jaron Jensen could sense Sunday’s wrestling dual between No. 11-ranked University of Wyoming and Oregon State was coming down to his final match. With the dual starting at 157 pounds, the Cowboys’ sophomore 149-pounder watched as the Cowboys battled the Beavers to a three-point lead heading into his bout with Josh Reyes. A win and the Cowboys walk away victorious. A loss and the dual would be decided by criteria. A bonus-point loss and the Cowboys lose. No pressure, right?
Cowgirls upbeat as they head on the road
LARAMIE – A pessimist might point out that the University of Wyoming women’s basketball team still hasn’t won a true road game this season. An optimist would counter the Cowgirls have only played three such games – and only one since Nov. 24 – against teams with a combined home record of 14-4. The optimist would add that all three – Saint Mary’s, Pacific and Boise State – were one-possession games with four minutes to play. They’d both be right.
UW wrestling taking advantage of home stand
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming wrestling team spent parts of December in Reno, Nevada, and Miami. So when the Cowboys returned from the South Beach Duals on Dec. 30, knowing they wouldn’t have to travel again until Feb. 3, they also knew they had to take advantage of the time at home. And they have. The Cowboys – winners of five consecutive duals – have climbed to No. 11 in the latest Intermat.com rankings as they host Oregon State at 2 p.m. Sunday at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Cowgirls play well on both ends of floor to rout SDSU
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski liked his Cowgirls’ 28-point win Saturday against UNLV. He just didn’t like the defense. Wednesday, Legerski was happy about both. The Cowgirls used a 26-3 run through the second quarter against San Diego State to build a 39-17 lead and never let the lead dip below 17 after that in an 87-45 victory before a crowd of 2,290 at the Arena-Auditorium.
