Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

A staff photographer for my college newspaper, The New Hampshire, at the University of New Hampshire.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! I love analogue media making. It adds a personal touch to letters to friends and family.

How is social media changing news?

Everyone can do it with ease. But not everyone can do it with quality and integrity. Professional journalists must rise above the noise.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent (Superman).

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be a curious person who lives in the community in which they report and helps the community talk about the things that matter to them.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

During the mid-morning hours, via email, with lots of portfolio links.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Pro DSLRs, PhotoMechanic, Trnio (3D scanning), Ricoh Theta V (360 photos/video), iPhone

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I love knowing what's going on before everyone else, and I love learning things first-hand.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm most proud of my coverage of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., and of my protest coverage throughout 2020.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Find something you are interested in (AKA, you would pay a lot of money to do anyway) and write about it or photograph it constantly.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Mid morning, via email.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Just a simple, "How do I shoot for the news?" No introduction, no background, no experience. But intended as a serious inquiry. regarding

What's your favorite drink?

An Old fashioned with locally-made whiskey.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In my living room with my dog.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New York Times.
