On this day, March 1, in 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire in the U.S. Capitol building, injuring five congressmen. The attackers, seeking independence for Puerto Rico from the United States, began shooting pistols from the balcony at the 240 representatives on the floor. The attackers were immediately arrested. The terrorists, led by Lolita Lebron, were sentenced to 70 years in prison, after their death sentences were commuted by President Eisenhower.

On this day, July 11, 1906, Chester Gillette murdered his pregnant girlfriend, Grace Brown, on Big Moose Lake in the Adirondack Mountains, a slaying that inspired the novel "An American Tragedy." That weekend, Brown hoped for a marriage proposal from Gillette. What she got was killed. Gillette took her for a ride in a boat, clubbed her with his tennis racket and left her to drown. The murder trial became a sensation. Brown's love letters were read in court and printed in newspapers.
