World Cup 2026: Portugal pay tribute to Diogo Jota after win over Croatia, nearly 1 year after his death

When Portugal stepped on to the pitch at Toronto's BMO Field Thursday night for their World Cup Round of 32 matchup against Croatia, they did so with an extra man in their presence. At the time of kick off, the date was July 3 in Portugal, which marked one year since the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. The pair were killed in a car crash when their Lamborghini went off the road in northern Spain. Jota was 28 years old.

There have been 189 total red card incidents involving players in World Cup history. Some ejections were via straight red cards, others were due to a player picking up a second yellow card. Many were earned, many were deserved, some were controversial, some were consequential to a player's team. Peru's Plácido Galindo was the first to be sent off in 1930. Folarin Balogun of the United States men's national team is the latest player to receive a red card in a World Cup match.

Alex Ovechkin signs 1-year deal to return to Capitals for 22nd NHL season Original

Alex Ovechkin is returning to the Washington Capitals for another season, the team announced on Thursday. Ovechkin, who will turn 41 in September, has signed a one-year deal that will see him earn a $1 million salary with a $3.25 million signing bonus. He will also earn an additional $4.75 million for playing at least 10 games. "I'm back!" said Ovechkin in a statement. "Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I'm healthy.
