Clouds return Sacramento and Fresno skies — what they mean for local temperatures

Typically by mid-August, much of the Central Valley begins to see average temperatures begin to slowly tick down. For the lower Sacramento Valley and the Delta region, that means highs in the low to mid- 90s. For much of the San Joaquin Valley, including Fresno, mid-August average highs are still in the upper 90s. Instead, late last week we were treated to temperatures more typical of early October.

Strong El Niño events are commonly associated with wet winters for the Golden State. As the jet stream and atmospheric rivers that dowse the Pacific Northwest in normal winters get pulled south into California by El Niño, they also become supercharged thanks to warmer ocean temperatures. And as the ongoing “Super El Niño” continues to strengthen, long-range climate models are already studying this scenario and projecting what it could mean for California as winter nears.
