Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Only to check if it was just for show.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email at any hour or day. By phone before 21:00 (Taiwan time) on weekdays. I'm always eager for new assignments.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I recently completed a feature on Taipei drag. It was a joy both to write and connect with the city's queer trailblazers.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Earlier this year, I was asked to cover a new aboriginal cooking tour for a Taipei-based magazine. I came. I ate. I food-comaed.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On my second-hand scooter, zipping up and down Taiwan's spellbinding coastline. Failing that, drinking coffee.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
For hard news, the Guardian. For travel content, Culture Trip.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Several friends and family members seem to think I write about Thailand. I am writing this response from Taipei.
