The availability of iron is essential for all living organisms. Many bacteria secure their supply by capturing ferric iron from the environment with small-molecule high-affinity chelators. These “siderophores” are secreted to form stable ferric complexes and are then recognized by specific cell surface receptors that trigger cellular reuptake.
