Amid the sound of fifes and drums, spectators waited at the steps of Northampton County Courthouse in Easton’s Centre Square to hear history: one of the first public readings of the Declaration of Independence, delivered by Robert Levers, chair of the Committee of Safety for Northampton County. It was July 8, 1776, just days after the document was signed by 56 men — including one from the Lehigh Valley.
