Abstract Chemical short-range order in disordered solid solutions often emerges with specific heat treatments. Unlike thermally activated ordering, mechanically derived short-range order (MSRO) in a multi-principal-element Fe40Mn40Cr10Co10 (at%) alloy originates from tensile deformation at 77 K, and its degree/extent can be tailored by adjusting the loading rates under quasistatic conditions.

Before starting the computation of any specific materials properties, we examined whether the present interatomic potential yields a stable fcc random solid solution for the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi HEA (designated CoCrFeMnNi HEA hearafter) in the typical process temperature range (1073–1473?K), as has been reported experimentally.11,14,15 To obtain the equilibrium atomic configuration, we performed a CMC simulation for 10,000 MC steps using a sample with 5760 atoms at 1073?K.
