Dear Editors, Utakata et al. reported that admission serum amino acid imbalance—assessed by branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), tyrosine and the BCAA-to-tyrosine ratio (BTR)—is independently associated with mortality among hospitalised patients with cirrhosis [1]. Using a large multicentre cohort with long-term follow-up, the authors demonstrate that low BTR, decreased BCAA levels, and increased tyrosine levels retain prognostic significance after adjustment for established clinical factors.
