Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) are a class of chemical compounds widely used as antimicrobials and disinfectants in industrial, institutional, and home cleaning. Generally, QACs used as disinfectants have a lipophilic alkyl tail attached to a positively charged (cationic) nitrogen atom bound to 4 residues (i.e., quaternary). While not very volatile, QACs are used in spray liquid disinfectants and thus aerosolize.
