Sam Smith, “Hazel Eyes.” “Everlasting Love.” Moondance.” “My Guy.” Whether Sam Smith means the echo, the titles tell you that Hazel Eyes is striving for timelessness. Smith has said they grew up listening to straight people sing love songs and felt them as deeply as anyone. With warm strings, trumpet, doo-wop snap and a gospel choir, Hazel Eyes is nostalgic almost to a fault. But Smith puts a beautiful spin on the oldies palette.

SAN FRANCISCO — St. Vincent made her San Francisco Symphony debut Thursday at Davies Symphony Hall, transforming songs from across her catalog with full-orchestra arrangements before gradually turning the formal concert hall into something closer to a rock show. By the end, she wanted everyone in the audience — except the orchestra — on their feet.
