Introduction Diabetes mellitus is clinically and genetically a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by dysregulated nutrient metabolism, resulting from defects in insulin secretion and action (1). Hyperglycemia, the hallmark of diabetes mellitus, can lead to a range of chronic complications associated with long-term damage and dysfunction in various organs and body systems (2).
