Cooling centers to open in Delaware for relief from heat wave

In response to the forecast for extreme heat, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services is opening cooling centers statewide July 15 to 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These spaces offer a safe, air-conditioned environment where anyone can cool down and stay hydrated, said Tim Mastro, deputy director of communications for the department. Also, the Sussex County government will provide cooling centers at the county administration building and three libraries.

July 14, 2026, 12:46 p.m. ET The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services is opening cooling centers statewide July 15-17 in response to the extreme heat warning. The high temperature on July 15 is expected to hit 100 degrees in Wilmington, Dover and Georgetown, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-to-upper 90s through July 17.
