Program: Communities protest new home developments

As state governments try to fast-track the development of new homes, some are facing a strong backlash from local communities. In Victoria, a large group of residents is arguing the state government is overriding local planning guidelines and cutting local councils and residents out of the process. It is calling on the Victorian government to reverse planning reforms and ensure locals have a say on how their neighbourhoods grow.

Liveable Victoria launched to campaign against Labor's planning reforms

A statewide coalition of 21 residents' groups will campaign to oppose the Victorian government's planning reforms, arguing councils and community members should have greater input into how their neighbourhoods are shaped by development. The Liveable Victoria alliance has been formed in opposition to the state government's controversial activity centres, which rezone land near tram stops and train stations across Melbourne to allow apartment towers as high as up to 20 storeys.

Parents demand action after falling concrete closes entire floor of Collingwood College

A Melbourne high school is sending students to another campus for some classes after concrete fell from a water-damaged roof and forced the closure of an entire floor in its main building. Concrete chunks split off and fell from the underside of the Collingwood College's terrace roof, smashing through the ceiling, during the January school holidays. A piece of concrete that fell from the roof of Collingwood College.
