Giving Voice to Eating Disorders in Boys
Because eating disorders often manifest differently in boys, they can be harder to detect by parents and healthcare providers. Stigma is another issue. It is believed that a quarter to a third of those struggling with an eating disorder are male, and disordered eating behaviors are reportedly increasing at a faster rate in males than females.

After the Call: Impossible, Wonderful Things
DiCamillo with current Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden at the banquet, 2004. Photo courtesy of the American Library Association Archives. I grew up on a dead-end street in a small town in central Florida. In the summertime, I went everywhere barefoot, and my feet were so callused that I could walk on the hot macadam or through a patch of sandspurs and not feel much at all.
After the Call: A Cure for the Flu
That year, ALA Midwinter was in Philadelphia. It was very cold. I was very cold, too. Indeed, I had a bad case of the flu, the worst I have ever had. I had been invited to the conference — the only time in my career I have attended Midwinter. The invitation came from Simon & Schuster to help promote an unusual book for me, a picture book, Silent Movie, which was just about to be released. The book was my attempt to replicate the experience of watching an early-twentieth-century film.
After the Call: A Healthy, Flourishing Weed
Illustrations created by Karen Hesse for this essay. Illustrations: Karen Hesse. What do water and sunshine mean to a weed? I was a skinny, freckle-faced ghost of a child. I had friends up and down my city block, but I was the weed in the garden. Long walks on sweltering summer days led to the Enoch Pratt Free Library, where the canny gatekeeper, Margaret N. “Peggy” Coughlan, welcomed me in and opened her stacks of treasures to me. Authors became my superheroes.
After the Call: Blooming at Last
First of all, I’d like to address the Newbery-related questions I’m asked most frequently. No, the medal isn’t real gold. No, it’s too heavy to wear around my neck. No, it’s too small to frame and hang on the wall. Yes, winning it is one of the most important things that ever happened to me. So just what did winning the Newbery Medal mean? And why? Here goes: As a child, I loved to write. I wrote as soon as I could hold a crayon.
After the Call: Everything Is Possible
Most of you are probably familiar with the Newbery traditions: the secret choice, the phone call, and the frenzy that follows. I had lived overseas for sixteen years and was not aware of these traditions, nor was I aware of the American Library Association or its vast network. Walk Two Moons was the first of my books to be published in the U.S. (I’d previously published one children’s and two adult novels in England.) This was before email or cellphones or social media.

ONE TIME by Sharon Creech Read by Jesse Vilinsky
Jesse Vilinsky delivers the first-person narrative of 11-year-old Gina Filomena. Most teachers say Gina doesn't pay attention, but "they mean I'm not paying attention to them." Vilinsky's youthful voice defines a perceptive girl whose poetic vision is reflected in her lyrical expressions. Her views are matched by those of Antonio, who moves in next door.

The Childrens Book Review
Thanhhà Lại | The Children’s Book Review | November 19, 2019 I was a war baby. My father became missing-in-action the week before I turned one. My mother raised nine children during the height of the Vietnam War. My oldest sister had to leave school to go to work. My six brothers knew if they didn’t ace every class and get into college, they would have to hold guns and become soldiers. And yet, and I know this sounds fictional, I remember us laughing all the time. My mother set the tone.

Must-have Books for the Holidays
Every December, parents find themselves exclaiming, “Not one more toy!” Garbage cans overflow with cardboard and plastic and batteries from toys children may play with once or twice before they are relegated to the bottom of the toy box. The joy and novelty of the newest gizmo is fleeting at best. Books however, are gifts that will leave an imprint on the heart of your child for years to come.

10 More Heartwarming Books for Dog Lovers
Last year I compiled a list of books for dog lovers. Here are ten more books about real and fictional canines that will warm your heart and wet your eyes. This book, which was recently adapted for the big screen, is about a dog’s search for his purpose over the course of multiple lives. Bailey, the canine protagonist, is reborn as an adorable golden retriever after his tragic life as a stray mutt meets an untimely end.
Hopping Fun Creations
I love NPR's Top 100 Ultimate Backseat Books for tweens. I also love that the responses to the list are so passionate and insightful (don't skip the comments!). It's a wonderful feeling when books and reading generate animated dialogue. I do sympathize with one commenter who said she wished reviewers would fill in more detail, especially when it comes to age appropriateness. The NPR lists spans a Grand Canyon of development—ages 9 to 14.
