Sharon Riley’s Biography

Sharon is an investigative journalist, covering Alberta, Canada, for The Narwhal. Her essays, interviews, and long-form nonfiction have been published by The Walrus, Harper’s, The Tyee, and Maisonneuve, among others.

She is a finalist for the 2018 Canadian Association of Journalists Awards for her story Life After Coal (The Narwhal), was named a finalist in the 2017 National Magazine Awards' Best New Magazine Writer category, was a 2017 recipient of the Access Copyright Foundation's Marian Hebb Research Grant for literary arts, and was shortlisted for the inaugural Allan Slaight Prize for Journalism in 2018.

For more than five years, Sharon also worked as a Canadian-based freelance editor, fact-checker, and copy-editor. She has contributed fact-checking and research to Harper's Magazine, VICE Magazine (where she was named an 'Employee of the Month' in March 2014), and to investigative features with The Investigative Fund at The Nation Institute, in collaboration with The Washington Post Magazine, Politico, The Huffington Post Highline, and many others.
