When he was about eight years old, Don Byron became an avid fan of the short-lived NBC drama T.H.E. Cat, which starred Robert Loggia as a reformed cat burglar turned crime fighter. In particular, he looked forward each week to the slinky, horn-heavy theme song.

Introducing the world premiere of For Marilyn Crispell earlier this month, conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin referred to Tyshawn Sorey’s new work for piano and orchestra as “one of the most singular pieces that we’ve ever performed. … It is, I would say, a work of genius.” It was hardly the first time that the “G” word has been applied to Sorey, who has been based in the Philly suburbs for the past five years after joining the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.

Saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins seems determined to engage more of his audiences’ senses than just their ears. In performances of his album Blues Blood in 2025, a chef prepared an Afro Caribbean stew live on stage, adding a mouth-watering sensorial component to the show. A 2024 performance at Harlem Stage featured him playing through a Dr. Seuss-like megaphone, a striking construction that made a visual impact equal to the inventive power of the saxophonist’s musical voice.
