Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I spent many years writing on a typewriter for school and for my own writing, but never for work (except for filling out forms).
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Scrivener, Zotero, Google Docs, MacBook Pro, Skype / CallRecorder, Clockify, and ... the internet.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter, mainly because it helps me stay up to date with the latest scientific research and ideas.
Who do you wish followed you?
The Dalai Lama ... although being on Twitter is probably not very mindful.
Why did you become a journalist?
For me, writing about health and science seemed like a natural fit after being involved in academic research for so many years.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Ha! I don't even know if my high school had a newspaper.
When's the best time to pitch you?
If you pitch me by email, any time is good. For embargoed studies sooner is always better. It's never too soon to share cool science with me.
What's your favorite drink?
I'm really enjoying my home-brewed kombucha right now. It's like tea transformed into a bubbly explosion of flavor.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Doing yoga in my home studio, hiking in the mountains, bicycling a country road, or exploring my local library (yes, real books!).
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Buddhadharma magazine.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I think there's a lot of confusion about how science really happens, especially when it comes to studies about our health.
