Abstract Elevated or ectopic expression of neuronal receptors promotes tumour progression in many cancer types1,2; neuroendocrine (NE) transformation of adenocarcinomas has also been associated with increased aggressiveness3. Whether the defining neuronal feature, namely electrical excitability, exists in cancer cells and impacts cancer progression remains mostly unexplored.

1. Introduction Mental health problems are increasing [1], making a significant contribution to the worldwide burden of disease [2]. Simultaneously, the number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing. It is estimated that mental health problems affect 10–20% of adolescents worldwide. In 2019, one in seven youths aged 11–19 suffered from mental health conditions.
