Introduction Pollen limitation, the reduction in seed production due to insufficient pollen receipt (Burd 1994, Larson and Barret 2000, Knight et al. 2005), may impact the evolution of floral characteristics and mating systems (Ashman et al. 2004, Fishman and Willis 2008) and even threaten the persistence of plant populations, with potential implications for plant conservation (Pattemore and Anderson 2013).

1 Introduction Climate change is reshaping global plant communities (Collins et al. 2022; Walther et al. 2002) directly by affecting species' intrinsic population growth rates and also indirectly by altering interactions between community members (Alexander, Diez, and Levine 2015; Gilman et al. 2010; Suttle, Thomsen, and Power 2007). For instance, warming and altered rainfall can change the outcomes of competition between co-occurring species (Matías et al. 2018; Van Dyke, Levine, and Kraft 2022).

Abstract Functional traits offer a potential avenue to generalize and forecast the impacts of changing competition on plant communities, including changing outcomes of competition among species that currently interact (current competition) or that will interact in the future following range shifts (novel competition).
