Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

John R. Oller Special Projects reporter for The Lantern, Ohio State's student-run newspaper.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Kit Kittredge and Kent Brockman

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to own a photography business but almost failed econ in high school, so I landed in journalism as the next best thing.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was the Arts Editor of the Arlingtonian, my high school's news magazine. I took pictures and did all the layouts.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A six-month project on college suicide rates and a two-part series on young adult cancer patients (both in my portfolio)

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Find a good mentor, always be working on something, go out and meet people (even if it's awkward)

When's the best time to pitch you?

Whenever you've got a good story for me.

What's your favorite drink?

Skim milk

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Driving around rural Eastern Ohio for stories, watching documentaries on my couch, or spending time with my friends at Bible study

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That it's unimportant because I cover an area outside of where most of our readership lives.
