Philadelphia's Marian Anderson Monarchs soccer team — a group of 11-year-old girls from South Philadelphia — will travel to Gothenburg, Sweden, this weekend to vie for the prestigious Gothia Cup in the world’s largest youth soccer tournament. The Monarchs, the only African American soccer team competing for the title, will be in a field that includes 21 teams representing countries such as Brazil, Italy, France and Sweden.

City officials and Muslim and Jewish groups in Philadelphia are condemning an apparent arson attack according to police that damaged a mosque in Northeast Philadelphia on Sunday and are calling for a thorough investigation into its cause. Officials said the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center, in the 1400 block of Tyson Avenue, was targeted at about 2 a.m. Sunday, July 5. Mayor Cherelle Parker denounced the apparent arson in a post on X.
