This academic year, Duke did not just experiment with artificial intelligence in the classroom. The University institutionalized OpenAI’s ChatGPT without consulting faculty. In June 2025, Duke signed a contract providing ChatGPT free to all students, staff, and faculty. This went beyond prior partnerships with Microsoft’s Copilot and Azure. After all, for tech companies, universities like Duke are a coveted revenue stream.

Scott Dyreng wants his students to be more human. His tool of choice: artificial intelligence monitoring his classroom. Dyreng, senior associate dean of innovation and professor of accounting, records his students’ in-class conversations and requires them to record team meetings outside the classroom. Then, he uses AI to analyze the interactions, giving him feedback on both his teaching and his students’ participation.

The Blue Devils entered Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va., with high hopes for the ACC championship, anticipating a day filled with intense competition and looking for deep runs in individual brackets. Instead, Duke’s tournament ended earlier than it may have expected, as all ten wrestlers fell in the quarterfinals. No. 6 Virginia Tech captured the team title with 106 points, while the Blue Devils finished at the bottom of the standings with just two.
