OPINION: Intrusive protests not welcomed at Moscow Farmers Market
Commentary: Opinion of Shirley Ringo We are living during challenging times where political polarization and conflicting core values strain relationships among friends, within families and within communities. Too often it manifests itself as intrusive public protests during times and at venues where people are seeking to escape the divisiveness and alienation in the world that surrounds us.
OPINION: Enamored of Trump, Gov. Little abandoned teachers
Mr. Governor — Over here! We need a veto! During my 14 years in Idaho’s Legislature, I believed that one of our main purposes should be attempting to solve problems. If a constituent approaches a legislator with a concern, the solution may lie in connecting that person with the right individual in state government or there may be a legislative solution. One of my pleasures of serving in the Legislature involved helping folks in this way.
OPINION: Know this: Launching wars is no way to wage peace
Commentary: Opinion of Shirley Ringo Oh no! The USA’s head brat didn’t get his way. He has made clear his expectation for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Unfortunately, he did not get the nod from the five-member Norwegian committee.
OPINION: A disingenuous Christmas greeting for Moscow teachers
The Idaho Education Association works hand-in-hand with educators, parents and others for quality public schools in our communities. The association represents thousands of Idaho’s elementary, secondary and retired educators. The IEA engages in collective bargaining in an attempt to assure that salaries, working conditions and benefits are competitive in our schools, not just for teachers but for school support staff as well. I have been retired from the Moscow School District for 25 years.
OPINION: Demolition Donald takes on East Wing of White House
Commentary: Opinion of Shirley Ringo Most of us have the ability to limit our actions in certain situations. We have lines we won’t cross because we realize it would be inappropriate. Richard Nixon found a such a line following the 1960 presidential election. As Dwight Eisenhower’s vice president, Nixon fully expected to win the election and defeat John Kennedy. He was bitterly disappointed in the election results. There was a glimmer of hope.
OPINION: Idaho’s public school teachers have their hands full
I have been involved in public schools from 1945 until my graduation from Washington State University in 1962. I retired from teaching in 2000, having taught at all levels with the exception of elementary school (kindergarten through sixth grade). But elementary school teachers are special, with many admirable qualities. They are determined to help children enjoy education, and develop self-confidence and an attitude that fosters success.
Opinion: U.S. goes from Carter to Trump in two generations
The death of our former president, Jimmy Carter, prompts an overview of changes in the political culture of our country from 1976 to 2016 and 2024. Carter graduated from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his education by focusing upon nuclear physics and reactor technology. He married Rosalynn in 1946 and they were married for 77 years.
Her View: For sake of democracy, research the candidates
Our current political climate points to the need for kindling an awareness for the importance of vetting candidates and participating in the election process. Signs of neglect are numerous. We have seen a former president who couldn’t embrace the concept of “former president” and promoted an insurrection resulting in an attack on our nation’s Capitol. There is a New York congressman who lied repeatedly about his resume and is currently under a 13-count indictment.
