1 Introduction As the foundation for food production in arid and semi-arid regions, irrigated agriculture generates 41.4% of the global food production, while occupying only 23.4% of the cultivated land (FAO, 2021). However, this high productivity comes with significant water demands, as agricultural irrigation accounts for approximately 70% of the global freshwater withdrawal (Marvuglia et al., 2022).
