PTSD Is Associated with Changes in the Intestine Results in this study indicate that the intestine is perturbed in individuals with PTSD including altered levels of bacterial metabolites, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and higher levels of intestine-derived EV with concurrent higher levels of HMGB1. This adds to an increasing body of literature highlighting the gut-brain axis in psychiatric disorders like PTSD, depression, and anxiety (23–27, 50–52).
