SOTC 8/26 - Should I change it up?
I have found myself now with a solid 5 watch collection of just Rolex and Omega. These are all great pieces, but have recently been feeling like it is a very “safe” mainstream collection, and wanting some more unique pieces/brands. Unfortunately, at the moment if I want to add a new watch something will have to go. I have been toying with the idea of selling the Explorer 2 and putting the funds towards both an IWC Pilot Chronograph 41 Mojave and Glashutte Original PanoReserve.
GPHG Competing Watches, 2026
You can see all the competing watches here: Le Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) est destiné à mettre en valeur et saluer annuellement l’excellence des productions horlogères contemporaines, afin de de contribuer au rayonnement de l’horlogerie de par le monde. www.gphg.org Like every year, I think it's fun to watch the GPHG competition, and they've published the competing watches for this year. These watches are paid entries in each category from a lot of brands.

My latest purchase (Sinn) has hastened my soft end to buying
So I started looking at a bunch of options from the typical sources. I considered options as high up as a used VC Overseas chrono and also looked into the GP Laureato Chrono. On the lower end, I looked at what Sinn had on hand. And the stuff in between from like Tag, Breitling, Zenith, Bremont, and a couple of others. The high end stuff was just too rich for my blood.
Killing Confusion By Eliminating Options
Too much of anything has never been good in the long-run. And also often in the short-term. I sometimes wonder what my life would look like if I had truly endless money. As in, there isn't anything I couldn't buy. If I want it, I can just have it, from a couple of bucks to millions of dollars, it's all the same. Part of me thinks my life could be a lot more simple having lost interest an interest in buying stuff as there's no financial northstar to guide my purchases.
Watches Of The 90s
Nice read from Teddy Baldassarre. I'm pumped the mighty Timex Ironman is on the list. Of course it's the author's opinion. The thread will probably wind up in the Trona mines, but it's a nice discussion/argument starter.😀🤦♂️ A look at the 1990s watches that defined a decade and set future trends, from the Seiko SKX to the Patek Philippe Aquanaut. teddybaldassarre.com #1 · Nice read from Teddy Baldassarre. it seems like there is almost no perfect watch
like seiko people look down on and then bunch of microbrands nobody have heard of and then longines but at that price you may as well get tudor but then people say tudor is a poor mans rolex and then with rolex you get bent over and even then lot of people will think your watch is fake so what do you guys think is the best watch all around?
JLC Reverso Chronograph - Impressions after a Week
Recently picked up a Reverso Chronograph and wanted to share some of my initial thoughts after wearing it a week straigh- Dial(s) and Movement Normally I'd talk about the dial and movement separately, but in this case they are one and the same! The non-chrono dial is an excellent example of how a time only dial should be done. I love how there are no numbers at all, only complementary shapes between the indices and the dauphin hands.
Chronographs - buyers advice sought
Are you buying one because you like the style with occasional use of the chrono function or do are you planning to use the chrono feature frequently? I think you need to try on some different chronographs and also identify your use case. I have a Tudor BB chrono. I've heard very positive things about the movement and over the last 5 or so years, it hasn't missed a beat. But it's freaking massive. And by massive, I mostly mean thickness. It's too thick and have banged it on all sorts of things.
This is the first time I've seriously looked into a mechanical watch; I always thought watches were just accessories.

Introduction: So many posts are made on these forums by people looking to mark, or celebrate special occasions with a new watch - birth of a child, graduation, milestone birthdays. And while no one should ever be denied their justification for wanting a new watch, it got me thinking about how I...
A one brand collection?
It's a simple question. If you could collect as many watches as you like, with no budget constraints, but all only from one brand, what brand would that be? Why? I am who I am, and it might be no surprise to many here, but for me it's Seiko. Ultra-versatility. Fun to collect pieces from their vast history. Well respected brand that represented the cutting edge of some technologies. A bedrock brand with designs I love. Pieces I wouldn't be afraid to use as a beater in light construction and whatnot.
I’m new here
Hello all!! I just found and joined this community of watch enthusiasts. It’s really amazing! If any of you have suggestions on how to use this I’d very much appreciate a few steers. I posted a few things already but I’m not totally sure how all this works. Any feedback is welcome. #1 · Hello all!! I just found and joined this community of watch enthusiasts. It’s really amazing! Sentimentality Vs Practicallity In Selling Your Watches
Obviously at the end of the day this is a personal decision. But I am curious for anyone else who experienced this/had thoughts on the balance between keeping a watch you dont wear for sentimental reasons versus selling it to solidify and upgrade the collection Two situations: First one: the first watch I got when I started collecting (my seiko alpinist) is just one I never wear anymore.
Watches on vacation!
Let’s see your watches enjoying all the hard use you put them through! I’ll start- I took my beloved Citizen Promaster Diver to the Dominican Republic in January 2025, of course. It wasn’t until I cracked the code and found a bar on the beach with non-watered down alcohol that I finally got white wine wasted and started taking pictures of my watch in its natural habitiat.
Would you ever finance a Rolex?
Just saw this StockX ad offering a Rolex GMT-Master II for $796/month over 24 months. Total comes to $17,200. Is watch financing becoming the new normal? Came across this research-backed article that digs into the trend and some of the psychology behind it: 👉 Luxury Watch Financing: How BNPL is Changing Luxury Buying Im curious to know how others here feel. Is this helping the hobby evolve, or does it miss the point of collecting?
anyone buy a treadmil recently?
My wife and I bought a Landice treadmill around 23 years ago. Alas, it is time to replace it. We'd look at another Landice, but I think their least expensive model is not close to $6,000.00. I'd like to spend no more than around $1500. I can do the research, but if anyone has bought one recently, I'd like to know what you bought and why Thanks Dave #1 · My wife and I bought a Landice treadmill around 23 years ago. FHS statistics are out for Feb 2025
#1 · Edited thread title to mention Feb 2025. Can skip to latest post. original title: FHS: 9.5% fewer Swiss watches exported in August than a year ago Newest update from FH: https://www.fhs.swiss/file/59/comm_240808_a.pdf It seems that producers are trying to offset falling unit sales by pushing more gold and gold-steel models. Precious metal watch exports increased by 3.7% in units and 21% in value. Gold plus gold-steel are now over half of overall export value. But only a tenth of the units.
New Purchase: Yema Skin Diver Slim CMM.20
I decided to throw caution to wind and just pull the trigger on a skin diver slim. Incidentally, I appear to be the second person on this forum to get this watch and it didn't turn out well for that person. A couple of days after I bought the watch, that poster reporter problem. Oh well. Why did I buy it? It's part of my plan to buy watches from other countries and this is my French representative. I also think they nailed the styling and size. I like the gray on the dial and bezel.
How often to wind automatic watch
#2 · Bad idea. Watches are never investments. Put the money in an ISA. #3 · Watches are pretty poor investments. Buy gold or an index fund. You don’t have to wind them at all. #4 · #6 · It is a planned investment but if it doesn't rise in value in 3 years I will keep it. Hence my question. #15 · #7 · I am not a fan of watch winders. If it’s part of a rotation then wind it before you wear it, then let it wind down. If you go through your rotation at least once every couple months, it will be fine.
How do you store your expensive watch collection
You'll need a big heavy safe that a typical opportunistic burglar wouldn't be able to easily carry away unseen. This depends on your home situation, like whether sombody can park a small truck in your driveway without raising suspicion. I have a fairly small safe that 2 men can carry without difficulty but is well hidden and bolted from the inside to a concrete floor.
Fit Check
I see wrist on either side of the lugs, you're good.
If you’re about to leave on a trip, which one are you picking up?
This year my travel watch is a Tudor BB chrono that's currently on a rubber strap. I have begun switching between strap/bracelet options when going on different trips.
Tom ford watches? Your views??
#2 · $2k to $10k???? WTF. Garbage. What an absolute joke, and an offense to horology. I'd be interested to see how many of these POS he's actually sold. #3 · Holy crap. Every morning there‘s someone getting up on our planet buying stuff like that. #4 · Not sure why all the angst - we're ALL aware how much branding plays its part on one's pysche, or are we suddenly pretending it's only the horology that draws us in?
Is there any truth that you should wind your manual wind watch once at the same time everyday due to increased accuracy?
At the same time doesn't really matter, but winding it before it gets near the end of the power reserve does improve the accuracy. So, assuming a watch with ~40h PR, winding it every 24h consistently is better than winding it after 12h one day, after 36h the next (= some hours on very low mainspring torque), and so on. Topping up the power multiple times per day won't be a problem.
If you had to depend upon one of the mechanical watches in your collection for telling the time (and more)- which one would you choose?
#1 · Just a silly hypothetical scenario - curious to see people's choices. Simple rules: Has to be a single watch you already own No Quartz, Electronics, or Radio Sync/Satellite GPS. Can not use digital phones or other electronic quartz or atomic clock driven devices to sync your watch (minus the bullet point below). You must rely solely on your mechanical watch for checking the time for each week.
Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation or Doxa Sub 300T Professional
#2 · Great pair to choose from. Both unique with loads of character and each with genuine contributions to dive watch lore (if I recall Zodiac had the depth title for a period). I presume you know this and looking used but the SUB 300 pictured is long sold out and not that easy to find on the secondary market. But a bona fide icon. Wearing comfort is unmatched (I have the Searambler 50th Anniversary) and just beyond cool.
Could/should this coating (Line-x) be used on watches?
Have you ever felt the texture of a spray in bed liner? It's one of the last things that you'd want on your wrist, abrading your skin, clothing, and anything else that it comes into contact with.
New IWC - 5 piece collection now :D
#1 · Pretty Slick, eh? The Other 4 in the collection: Jokes aside - I kinda like this little collection from Hot Wheels. Apparently the CEO of IWC has a penchant for Hot Wheels so they seem to enjoy throwing out one of these every so often. The Team Transport pairs are ones I managed to snag on clearance at Walmart, but the new G-Wagen was actually in the OffRoad Premium collection they just released.
Deciding on a new watch ?!
#1 · Hi all, New to watches, and I'm looking to buy one, have narrowed it down to these as I'm interested in Open Heart watches, my wrist is 7 inches. In order of prefeerence.

Rolex or Tudor
#2 · Which specific watches? #3 · Top end Tudor is over 4kUSD or is this just a good deal? #4 · Easily the Tudor between those two options. Can't tick option 3 since I don't hate any watches. I'd just have other preferences. Apart from that, every time I hear questions like this that just call the watches "a Rolex", "a Tutor" or "a (any other brand)" I get the impression that brand perception is the main driver for the purchase, which just sounds stupid to me.
Amtrak Acela
#2 · A Moser in the flesh. That is a good spot. #5 · It was really funny. I told him. “I couldn’t help but notice your watch, it’s really nice.” And he got a little nervous. Then I added, “is it a Moser?” And then he opened up. #3 · Penn Station is one of the last places I'd expect to spot an H Moser. #4 · Amtrak trains don’t come into Penn Station anymore. It’s the brand new, beautiful Moynihan Train Hall that opened during the pandemic. It’s actually pretty remarkable. #6 · I bet.

Anyone wear a watch that's a tribute to their younger self?
Do people own or buy watches that remind them of their watch interests when they were kids? I imagine it's not very common as most people start out not liking very good watches. When I was a kid there were basically 3 watches/watch types that I loved. The first gen timex Ironman was my first love and the first watch I saved up for when I was like 8yo. Then I loved swatches. I only owned one, but I loved going to Macy's and looking at what was on offer.
Adding to your main collection with your old watches. Anyone do this?
But then there's the last watch. It's a 8-10 yo G-shock Mudmaster. It stopped working one day and was speckled with both latex paint and sweat. I put it in a drawer indefinitely about 5 yrs ago. I'd see it every so often, but didn't feel compelled to revive it. And then like a bolt of lightening it hit me. About 3 days ago I suddenly had this strong urge to bring the watch back. I could use it when I run. I could use it as beater travel watch. Who doesn't love a g-shock?
Watch sightings at Boston Logan Airport
File this under "cool story bro". I saw an usually interesting collection of watches while in the American Lounge in Boston today. One dude had an Omega Planet Ocean on. Nice! What's better? The guy next to him wearing what looked to be an FP Journe. Did I speak to either of those guys about their watches? Heck no. But I was wearing my 2023 business travel watch:Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
What is it about Doxas?
Joined Dec 22, 2013 · 1,768 Posts Discussion Starter · #1 · a moment ago I love my Doxa 1200t, it's a great watch. I don't expect others to love the Doxa style like I do as I buy watches for my own pleasure. As my sig will attest, I own watches way more expensive than my 1200t. My Glashutte Original Panoreserve is a gorgeous watch. And yet the only watch I get comments on is my orange dial Doxa. The first comment I received was at a cars and coffee.
I'm out of control: 2 watches in 5 months!
Joined Dec 22, 2013 · 916 Posts Discussion Starter • #1 • a moment ago PART 1 For the second time in my life I bought two watches in a single year. The first time, I bought the ExpII in my sig and the Tag Heuer Monza. Life was good---I also felt guilty spending so much money on watches in a given year. I got over it. What I didn't get over was the cheap/chintsy look to the dial and the pins (?) that the hands are set on. Eventually, that's all I saw when I looked at it.
